JUMP ROPE FOR THE HEART

There are so many things that are great for the HEART.

Last week, I had the opportunity to Jump Rope For Heart

~Jump Rope For Heart are national programs jointly sponsored by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) and the American Heart Association (AHA)~with 2nd graders.

PE teachers from Alamosa Elementary did an amazing job. I enjoyed every singe aspect of the program. From trying different ways to jump to singing and jumping. It was so touching to see all the kids get excited when there was time to check their heart rate.

You can tell, kids love to be active and exercise. I really want to congratulate Alamosa Elementary School for a successful 2012 Jump Rope For Heart program.

To Miss Cervantez class, Thank You for letting me jump the rope with all of you.

SURPRISES

Thank You and Congrats to my brother, Johnny, and my mom for making it happen!

This month/year has been full of surprises. Some have been good another ones not so good, yet the outcome will always the same "an adventure". An adventure that we are the ones that decide which path is going to take.

After I surprised them we went to get something to eat.

The night I arrived home from the trials, there was a situation in the family that was even more powerful than my personal disappointment from the trials. My mother was in a local hotel downtown El Paso Texas waiting for the day she was going to meet with a consul in Ciudad Juarez for her residence card. The following morning as soon as I woke up my first question was: What am I doing here? So, I grabbed a few outfits, got in the car and drove to El Paso to be with my mom and brother.

If you are not familiar with the immigration process to get become a resident of the USA, let me tell you a few things.

1) Is a long process: Mom's case had been in process for two years already and still with the possibility of being rejected.

2) Its expensive: So far without a lawyer we had spend over 6 thousand dollars, not counting the trip to El Paso Texas for final interview in Ciudad Juarez. Just the medical exams two days before the interview at the US consulate in Ciudad Juarez were $450 dollars.

If approved this will be the first step in case my mom decides to become a US Citizen one day. If her residence is granted then she has to wait 5 years before she applies for citizenship.
Then, I wonder, how come our politicians or news reporters don't tell us that to become a US Citizen one needs to have the time and plenty of money to cover the cost of the process?

Being there allowed me to see success and failure from a different perspective. It was so surreal to see hundreds of people standing outside the US Consulate in Ciudad Juarez waiting for their relatives to come out of the building they were being interviewed, others walking from one building to another nicely dressed with thick folders on their hands. Once again, we were not alone.

In the nearby hotels, you will see people calling home to ask for a missing signature, a sponsor, money, a missing document, you name it. Two hours later I see my mom and my brother coming. Mom with an unusual smile on her face. That's when I knew, they had granted her the residence.

In order to process her residence, they took her passport and visa away. Mon has to wait 3 to 4 weeks before she receives her residence card (Green card). So, after we visited and had lunch we took mom to the bus station for her to to go back to Charcas (12 hour express bus ride). Mom suggested that instead of taking a taxi downtown it would be better for us to take the public bus to save some money (18 dollars). We did and yes! There were more lessons and surprises during the bus ride.

Two days later after the trials, there I was walking with my brother through downtown Ciudad Juarez letting my heart grow in a way I have never imagined. I realized that the most valuable lessons in life will always have a very special price. Surprise, surprise!

The start of the 2012 Olympic Trials

Im back home and find myself physically and emotionally exhausted. I have a feeling the next two weeks will be weeks of growth and understanding. If you have been at some of my speaking engagements and have heard me talk about my philosophy on how is it that our hearts grow, then you will understand what I am talking about.

The biggest surprise of the weekend
was to see my sister Alicia show up
the day before the race to the hotel
with the rest of the family.

Yesterday, an hour before the trials and thirty minutes or so after the race was over, my heart could not wait and started the process. Yes, I found myself crying in front of my coach. I was crying, because It was my way to express how grateful and thankful I was to make it to another Olympic Trials. I was grateful to have another chance and I was determined to make the best of what the day had to offer. Then, three hours and a half later tears came out soon after I saw my sister. For once I understood the meaning of the sport and why I was there. Yesterday, I was able to appreciate what I have accomplished all this years.

Thirty nine hours later, I can tell you I gave my best, even if my best was not my personal best or my favorite place, that was my best yesterday and I am absolutely proud of it. I am proud of my journey here. I am proud of making it this far. I am motivated to get my body 100% and see what I can do when I take my engine to the mechanic for an adjustment and oil change.

Priceless!!!!

For know, I will allow this heart of mine do its growing and then I will take it from there. Thanks to everyone who in one way or another gave me a hand to get to this point. To my porra (cheering fans and family) big, big thanks!

All in all, I am proud to be an IN THE ARENA athlete. I am proud of my 33rd place and my 2:38:37 finishing time, because its allowing me to go to a wonderful process: Feel my heart grow!

HAPPY 2012

Cant believe 2012 is already here. The Olympic trials are just two weeks away. I've been in Houston for a month now and the adventures and experiences are going to be ones to remember for years to come. I am excited to be part of the 2012 Olympic trials field. Im very happy to look back and once again confirm that is not about the destination, but the journey. A journey that I am very fortunate to have taken.

2011 was a year that allowed me to explore and try new things. I left Alamosa for several training camps at sea level at my own expense. The price paid was well worth it. My time in California did not only allowed me to grow as an athlete, but to learn more about myself, and in top of that I was able to share my passion and love for this sport with one of my oldest brothers (Jhonny) whom at the end was even able to pace some of my workouts. This decisions and changes were not easy, but for sure they made me appreciate all the people and network of support I have in Alamosa. In 2011 I clearly experience that saying: "You don't know what you have until is taken away".

Furthermore, 2011 allowed me to witness many positive transformations with all the kids and people I work with in the after school tutoring program. The highlights of the year were seeing our kids grades go up and seeing parents get involved in their children's activities during and after school.

How to forget when all the kids receive a bunch of goodies from PUMA and the endless phone calls from a girl from Grand Junction inviting me to come and run the Girls Run 5km on the run with her. What about when the day I get and email confirming I made the USA World Championship team and two weeks later I get an apology call saying "Sorry, you are not" Then, after having the worst race and finishing last at the USA Track and Field 10,000m race, I confirm I'm back on what would be my 3rd World Championship team. Yeah, like I said back then~Bittersweet experience.

Being part of the World Championship USA Team and represent the USA for the 3rd time was just a gift from God. A great, great experience!

Wow, so many sweet and not so sweet memories, but all of them had to happen for a reason and many months later I am grateful for them as I can clearly see the reasoning behind every single event or circumstance.

For 2012, Im excited to continue to grow and put into practice all I've learned from 2011. Quite honest, Im looking forward to a successful year.

UPDATE ON TRAINING

What: USA Men and Women Olympic Trials
Where: Downtown, Houston Texas
When: January 14th, 2012 8:00a.m.
Distance: 26.2 miles
Top 3 men and women will qualify to represent the United States at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London in the Marathon.

I am currently in the city where the Olympic Trials will take place. Yes, I am in Houston, Texas. Winters in Alamosa, Colorado can be quite chilly (Just this week the highest calls for 25 and lows -23) Two months ago, me and my Coach agreed that it would be best for me to head to Houston 6 weeks before the marathon trials to avoid the low temperatures.

This decision was an easy one as I had the most amazing people to support me. At home my older sister Norma and Immigrant Resource Center agreed on taking care of the tutoring program and in Houston the Coach and members of the Rice University Cross Country and Track Team whom I met back in 2008 at the Houston Half offered a place for me to stay.

Its been already two weeks since I arrived in Houston and quite honest I could not ask for a better setting. Becky Wade, who send me an open invitation to come and stay at her place in Houston has been amazingly supportive. She made sure I was well situated before she left for vacation. She showed me around and let me borrowed her bike. Also, she introduced me to the most wonderful hosts, Lennie Waite and Allyson Pye. They offered for me to stay in their place as they had an extra guest room I could use.

Im so amazed of how accommodating all of them have been. The location is amazing, I can get to the Olympic trials course either by running (3 miles) or by bus. It only takes 10 minutes to get there by bus and the bus stop is just around the corner. Also, I can run from home to run around the loop at rice university and Hermann park.

Thanks to Rice Cross Country Coach, Jim Beven, I am allow to use to the Rice University's training room facilities.

Most days I have to train on my own. Sunday has been my lucky day as Ive been having company for the past 3 Sundays.

Im excited and confident about the upcoming trials. As long as I follow the training schedule, take care of the little things, and believe my best marathon is yet to come I know the trials are going to be amazing.

Today, after the 22 miler, I can tell my training is coming around and my body is feeling stronger as the days go by.

I am so greatful and thankful for all the love and support given. By far, the best Christmas present one could ever ask for.

BE PART OF SOMETHING GREAT

Great news! 12 kids from Club Penguin made it to the 2011 USATF Cross Country Junior Olympics. The race will take place on December 10, 2011 in Myrtle Beach, SC at the Whispering Pines Golf Course. So if you live there or know someone from the area please invite them to come and cheer for our youth. I can not express how happy and excited I am for this group of kids. I have seen them train hard for the past two months. I have heard heartbreaking and successful stories along the way. Stories that they will treasure for the rest of their lives.

For many of them, this will be their first trip to a national meet. Perhaps, the first time they get to leave. the valley, the state of Colorado, get on a plane, or be in a beach town. As many of us know, it takes time, money, dedication, effort and a group of people to make wonderful things happen. This would not be possible if it was not for the penguins club coaches, (Peter DeLaCerda and his wife Ronda DeLa Cerda), parents and volunteers. They all have work hard to keep this group of kids motivated and in shape to get to where they are now. A a wonderful example of team effort.

If you want to be part of this kids journey and contribute to this program, you can do so by making a donation to the club. All the kids are currently raising money to pay for their expenses to this meet. Please meet Brayan Flores and Oscar Martinez.They are two young men full of energy, dreams, and aspirations. Both fun and wonderful to be around. They were members of the Ortega Middle School Cross Country team. Both are active members of the after school ITA tutoring program and now members of local running club "The Penguins". Brayan and Oscar are currently getting ready for the Regional Cross Country Junior Olympics that will be held in Denver next Saturday, November 19th. Oscar is looking to qualify as an individual for the national meet on December 10th in South Carolina. On the other hand, Brayan is excited to secure an individual spot and help his new team,"The Penguins" qualify to national Junior Olympics.

Brayan and Oscar have made a significant impact in the sport of cross country and the lives of those around them. This is the very first time both of them join a cross country and a running club. In a short period of time,their love and dedication to the sport has taken them a long ways. They have learned and shared experiences with other runners all over the state.
Both made it to the first ever State Middle School Championship in Denver. Two days after both of them thought the season was over, they got invited to join "The Penguin Club" so that they could participate in the Colorado USATF Cross Country Junior Olympics. On November 5th,both them finished 18th in their respective races at the Colorado USATF State Junior Olympics. Top 25 qualified for regionals. Brayan not only secure his spot as individual, but his team finish first and also advanced.

It has been an honor to be able to be there for Brayan and Oscar. I am happy to know they are making the best of the opportunity. I publicly, want to thank their parents, coaches, and network of support for helping these kids get where they are now. From experience, I can tell you that whether they pursue running or not, the experience they are living now will shape their lives forever.

Oscar and Brayan, I am very proud of you and wish you accomplish your goal of making it to Nationals. Thank you so much for making your family, friends, school, club, and all around you proud. Most of all, thank you for giving yourself a chance to overcome new challenges.

Hi Brayan, how did you get involved in Cross Country?

I got a message from the Coach at Ortega Middle School, Mr. Lavier,
asking me if I wanted to join the Cross Country team.

Why did you join?

To get better at running.

How was your season, tell us about your experience?

My season went good. I got to know more people. I got to experience running on a team. This is the first time I get to travel with a team on my own. It was so much fun. Practice sometimes was hard, but it helped me get better. There were days I did not wanted to go, but knowing that my teammates were going to be there motivated me. It was fun hanging out with my teammates at practice. It felt like I knew all of them from a long time. We all got really close.

What are your goals?

My goal is to help my new team "Penguin Club" to make it to USATF National Junior Olympics.

Anything that you want to add?

Yes, that I love my family and I thank them for supporting me and helping me be where I am. So far, I got to run for Ortega Middle School, make it to State and try for USATF National Junior Olympics. Also, thank you to my coaches and teammates.

Hi Oscar, how did you get involved in Cross Country?

I got a good place in a mile fun run when I was in 2nd grade and I actually liked it. After that I always wanted to run or join a club, but never happened. It was not until the beginning of the year a Ortega middle School that my history teacher, Mr. DelaCerda, asked me if I wanted to join cross country. I gave all the excuses I could find not to join, but he insisted. Then, I finally said: "Yes, I will join"

Why did you join?

I wanted to do something productive after school instead of going home and just play Black Ops.

How was your season? Tell us about the experience.

Individually , I did okay. I learned in order for us to enjoy the competition, running has to be fun. I enjoyed being nervous before a race. Practice is easy except for hard days when we do intervals. I liked playing and messing around with my teammates. It was so much fun playing the nervous game with Emily on the bus. I really enjoyed running for a team at Ortega Middle School. Now, for Junior Olympics I don't have a team and I am having to run individually. Its nice to be part of Club Penguin.

What are your goals?

My goal for Junior Olympics is to make it to nationals. My goal in life is to become a better runner and one day beat Usain Bolts time in the 100m.

Anything that you want to say?

I feel everyone is a good runner in their own way. Everybody can achieve their dreams. Thanks to my mommy for letting me join the sport and my dad for coming to my races. Thank you to Alicia Zapata (such a good person) for driving us to Denver for our races and Norma Gomez for feeding us. To my coaches and friends Thank You. THE POWER OF ASKING

I have always encouraged my kids to ask. Ask for a favor, advise, a hug, food, or simply ask out of curiosity.

I guess that has been something I have never been hesitant to do as I've learn to ask at a very early age. I clearly remember when I was 6 yars old when one morning I had to stay with one of my neighbors and I asked if she could prepare some homemade red chilakiles. Make story short, the wonderful lady did. She prepared them from scratch. sUntil this day, those are the best red chilakiles and lesson of caring I have ever had.

A windy and cold afternoon did not stop them from showing up to race

This past week, I had plenty of events to attend. Two of them were the High Altitude challenge races for kids sponsored by the Alamosa recreational center. An event, that has become a tradition for all kids from tutoring program. To my luck my vehicle was at the mechanic and the van I used in the past to transport my kids to this events broke down several months ago. For the first race, Mayra one of the neighbors came to my rescue. She let me borrow her van and helped me bring some kids on her other vehicle.

For the second race, I decided to simply look into my contact list and call people to see who could help. Then surprise, surprise! My Coach, Damon Martin, came to the rescue and agreed to partner up with ITA. Coach Martin provided me with a 15 seat passenger van to bring the kids to the last two races of the series.

Amazing how one thing led to another, at the race a mother of 2 year old, Tyler Dokon, asked me if one of my kids could pace her son. Here is when Magi one of my girls from the program volunteered to pace the little kid. Magi was one of the girls that initially needed a ride to the race.

For the third and last race, without anyone asking, voluntarily Magi joined Tyler 400m into the race to pace him. After the race, the little kid gave Magi a handmade Thank You note and an invitation for her and all ITA kids to a Halloween party on the 28th.I guess that is what I would call socializing, making friends, meeting people, being a community, helping others, you name it.

Tayler's dad happens to be a professor at Adams State and told me he would love to help me get some students to come and help with tutoring. If that works out.. What a bonus!

Its amazing how the power of asking works. One thing led to another one. The personal memories and experiences we all take from the high altitude challenge will be ones to remember.

TUTORING AND MENTORING

Im a very proud Athlete, Tutor, and Mentor for In the Arena. An ordinary day for me would be an AM Workout followed with breakfast, errands, nap, lunch, 2nd workout, weights, tutoring, dinner, then free time to mentor.

The nicest thing about working for In the Arena is that I get to develop and design my programs and own working schedule. My job is so rewarding and motivating that there are days when without thinking about it I have already spend 5 to 6 hours of tutoring and mentoring.

Just last week one of my girls from the tutoring program came by my apartment and asked me if I happen to have an action picture of her. She needed a copy for an assignment they were working on her 6th period class. So I had her come in and help me find some pictures of her on my computer. After a couple of hours of laughing and sharing stories about all the pictures we found she finally chose one. I did not have a printer at home and it was already 9:00p.m for us to go to the store and print a copy. So, I told her I would make sure she would have a copy of that picture before her 6th period class. That night I went to bed with a mission. Next day after my A.M. workout and breakfast, I trully enjoyed seeing my girl, Karen Aguilar, smiling and feeling supported when I came to her school with a copy of the action picture she needed. That morning, I felt accomplished as I knew I was doing exactly what IN THE ARENA strives for. Then, once again I realized I was at "work", I was "In the Arena"

That day the fun and excitement did not end there. After my second workout, I had plan to take my kids from the tutoring program to a local XC race. The support I had from kids and parents was overwhelming. Parents came along to help me monitor and cheer on the kids and the kids response to the opportunity was amazing as all of them raced their hearts out.

After the race, we hustle back to the apartments to take advantage of the last 30 minutes of tutoring. Fortunately, we were able to stay in the office longer. So, my kids did not only had the opportunity to experience a cross country race for the first or second time, but they were able to finish their homework for next day.

So if you were to ask me what is it that I do for a job besides being and athlete? My answer would be: "On my free time I trully ENJOY and LOVE tutoring and mentoring kids"

This is how the crowd reacted during and after 100m World record holder, World and Olympic Champion Usain Bolt gets Disqualified in the 100m finals at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea due to a false start~ Heartbreaking!

Usain Bolt being able to control himself and continue with his cool down routine after being Disqualified at the 2011 World Chapionships in Daegu South Korea. This is at the Warm up area as people were leaving the stadium and reporters patiently waited until he was ready to talk. Amazing!

Im in Daegu, South Korea for my 3rd World Championships. Thank You In The Arena for believing in me. Thank you for you endless financial and moral support. Thanks for giving me the wonderful opportunity to not only reach out to our youth, but to reach out for my dreams. Being here in Daeugu is a DREAM come true. Putting on the USA uniform and representing the country in the sport I love the most is way more than I could ask for. Im enjoying my experience here. Im honor and delighted to represent every single one of the kids I have worked or come accross in the past 4 years. I am a dreamer, a believer, I am so proud to be who I am, and I thank you for that~

El idioma del atletismo es universal~ Hoy 2 minutos para terminar con mi entreno fuerte a la orilla del rio un koreano se pone a la par a igualarme el paso y a correr conmigo. Al terminar nos dimos la mano yo baje mi cabeza y le dije Gracias, el con una sonrisa gigante en su rostro hizo lo mismo y prosiguio su camino. Aun continuo sonriendo!

The running language is universal. Today during the last two minutes of my hard session along the river path, a Korean man tags along and starts running with me. When the time was up, we grabbed eachothers hands. I bowed and said "Thank You". With a huge smile in his face he did the same thing and kept going. I am still smiling!

NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ALAMOSA

The new elementary school, Alamosa Elementary, in Alamosa will be opening their doors later this month for the 2011- 2012 school year . Before the 2010-2011 school year ended I was able to come and visit the new facilities with all the kids from evans elementary school. Kids are excited about the new change and it was wonderful to hear many of them make positive comments like " With a school like this, It makes me want to come to school everyday". Quite honest after visiting the facilities it made me want to be an elementary student again. The good thing about the change is that all kids from Polston, Boyd, and Evans will be able to share and enjoy this new facility at the beggining of this upcoming school year.

BITTERSWEET EXPERIENCE

I have been in Eugene, Oregon for the USA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships aka World Trials since this past Tuesday. After a few days of reflection upon my performance on the first day of competition where I participated on the senior women 10,000m race, I came to the conclusion that the experience can be best describe as a "Bittersweet Experience"

I came to the national meet expecting to to leave the track with a personal best. Instead I left the track with tired legs, last place finish, and a time that was 2 minutes slower than predicted. The question is, how and why did this have to happen on the most important day of the season? The answers can be many, but after putting the puzzle together Im sure I overworked myself (overtrained) the last two weeks leading to the championships. Looking back, I know that in the previous 12 days I was very excited to be back to sea level and have a training partner that Im sure I over did it on my easy days. As much as I would like to blame someone else, I know it was my own decisions that led me to such a poor performance. A performance that I never expected to have on my first ever USA Outdoor National Championships.

As you can imagine, my spirits were not in good shape, but after a few days of reflection there is only one thing that I can put into practice "Live and Learn" and "Make the best out of the experiece" after all, that is what life is all about "Experience". Even tough this was the bitter part of my experience in Eugene, I get to go home with a much sweeter outcome.

Thanks to Kara Goucher who finished 2nd place in the 10,000m and in the process hit the A standard for worlds, I get to be on the USA World Championship Marathon Team for Dageu South Korea on August 27th. Yes, my 3rd World Championship Marathon Team! One of the main reasons that keep me in the sport is this~ The oportunnity to represent the USA in the second major event in athletics and hopefully in the near future the Olympics.

Many great things came out of my stay in Eugene. Enjoyed being and spectator and a fan. Seeing everyone compete and giving it a shot to earn a spot on the world team is simply inspiring. As a fan I enjoyed yelling and screaming my heart out. As an athlete I feel for the ones that came up short of reaching a dream. Im excited to go back home to prepared for the next challenge: a very hot and humid marathon at the World Championships in Dageu, South Korea.

The 2010-2011 After School Tutoring program has come to an end and to celebrate the big success we decided to have a pizza party. I would like to thank the immigrant resource center for providing pizza and drinks for the kids. Also, big thanks Norma Gomez and Phil Archuleta main volunteers for all their help.

Im so happy to announce that tutoring had a significant impact on the students final grades. 100% of the students tutored improved their grades by more than 20%. We had kids who at the beggining of the program had 2s with 4s being the highest and ended up with 3+ and 4s. Most importantly all of them learned to appreciate and enjoy having after school homework.

One of the many things I enjoy about the program was the way each kid would get involve by helping and guiding other kids. They all became really close and good friends. Also, I really had a blast on our running activities like the XC, Indoor, and Outdoor competitions.

For sure, a great program with a lot of success. It is our intention to keep the program going for the next school year. Teachers, parents, tutors and myself are so proud of our children. Great job everyone!!! You all Rock!!! Here is the link to all the pictures from our last day!

ITA Tutoring Program Crew

On May 11th two days after I arrived to Alamosa from my 6 week sea level training I was already back into the swing of things with my kids from tutoring program. That week we had an important event to attend, The Hershey track meet hosted by the Alamosa Recreational Center and Adams State College.

The day before the meet I was able to get 5 more of my students to participate.I was very happy when their parents gave me the green light to take them. As I have done in the past, we all met in front of the main office of our apartment complex and loaded up in my 1998 Windstar Van. One of the extra exciting things we all got to do besides racing was giving away a lot of goodies from PUMA. We gave away around 120 Usain bold inflated arms, 100 shoe key chains, and 200 water bottles.

The Hershey meet was a complete success as around 500 kids from all over the San Luis Valley got to participate. The main goal was to give kids the opportunity to get involve in the sport of track and field. The mission was accomplished as everyone seemed to really have a good time.

Im so proud to announce that, Brayan Flores, one of our kids from the In Arena Program advance to state in the 100m and 200m. Laiza won her heat and was very close to making it to State. The rest of the group fared well giving the fact that this was their first outdoor experience ever.

As in previous field trips or outside events, after the meet I took the kids to grab something to eat and we headed to the park for an after "party" to celebrate the opportunity of being part of something GREAT, In The Arena.

CELEBRATING OUR MOMS

Early in the week, Norma, one of our volunteers at the Tutoring program had a surprise for us. She had come up with a great project for the kids and even donated all the material necessary for it. The proyect was to have the kids show how much they love and apprecite their mothers by helping them make a special artificial flower arrangements for their moms.

It was wonderful to see Norma, Phil, and the kids work together as a big family. Everyone was very happy and excited about the project. Interesting to see how the group has become so close. All of them shared their flowers and help with ideas. It touched my heart to witness how each and everyone of them really had something special to say about their mothers. For a moment, they forgot about the world and insted they put their heart and soul into their own special arrangements.

Definitely, this was a great way to socialize and work on their creativity.
My role for the day was the one of a photographer. I trully enjoy taking pictures and making videos. Makes me proud to share and celebrate our moms with all of our supporters that make this program happen.

VISIT TO ADAMS SCHOOL

Amazing how life works! Im back for a few weeks to the place where my life in the US started, Orange County. While Im here mainly for sea level training (lots of running), nothing makes me more excited than having the opportunity to reach out to our youth in the place than once open the doors for me.

It was here in Costa Mesa where I took my first English classes, where I first learned about running, graduated from high school, went to a Junior College and eventually ended up transferring to Adams State College in Colorado. Now, back in town, It only made sense to go out there and give something back to the community.

This time I had the opportunity to run and visit with students from Adams School during their 20 minute Jog Walk event. The event started at 8:30 a.m on April 6th. After taking some pictures and videos, I stayed a bit longer to visit with some students while they were in class.

I have to thank the principal and teachers for allowing me to share some of my experiences with the students. To all the kids that participated, "Great Job". It is my hope that all your dreams and aspirations come true. Who knows maybe, a few years from now, many of you will be the ones coming back sharing your experiences to the new generations. One thing is for sure, my visit to Adams School will be one to remember. Thank You All for making it so SPECIAL!

Im writing this post from the place where my life in the United States started. Im in Costa Mesa, California for some sea level training. I plan on staying here for a period of six weeks. During this time I plan on doing some track races with a major focus on the 10km.Im quite nervous and excited about this new addition in training. Its has been almost 7 years since I last stayed at sea level to train. Me and my Coach are very confident that in the long run this decision will bea great benefit.

The main issue I had before taking this step was the ITA after school tutoring program. Things are going so well that the last thing I wanted to do was leave my kids. The good news is that I have two wonderful people that were willing to help me out during the time Im gone. Under the supervision of the Immigrant Resource Center, Norma and Phil will be fully in charge of the program while Im gone. In the past two weeks, the kids have been fairly busy with stadarized testing which means barely homework.Plus, Im glad this upcoming week calls for their spring break. So, in a way Im glad the sea level training block is happening now.

While here, I have done a couple of short races to test my track abilities. One of them was at the UCI Spring Break Invitational where I had the opportunity to visit and cheer with Coach and members of ITA NH Track Club. For this meet I focus on racing the 1500m. Ended up finishing 4th with a time of 4:29.74 just a second slower than my personal best. Not bad at all after, a week of traveling, high mileage, and adjustment to new environment.

My second race was this past Friday at Cal State Fullerton. Once again, I raced the 1500m with no taper. Finish 5th with a 4:36. I was not very happy with the results as I was hoping to be faster than the previous race. Im sure high mileage (100 miles per week) and running more hills than usual play a significant role on my performance. My body just felt tired. An hour later I jumped into the 5km to use as a workout. I ended up running with an amazing group of collegiate athletes from Cornell who where pacing their teammates. It turned into a fun,and fast workout. That night, I ended up running 17:07 for 5km.

ALL STARTS WITH A DREAM

That's the end of a featured video I shared with 8th graders during a speaking engagement for OMS College Days program at Adams State College.

All started with a DREAM. I always dreamed to earn a college degree. I did not know how, where, and when this was going to happen. Little I knew that I was going to become a runner, go to a junior college, then earn a full ride scholarship to Adams State College.

My dream of earning a degree kept me awake and aware of all opportunities. That awarness and willingness to persue my dream opened one door after another.

I have traveled to places I've never dreamed of. I have met so many wonderful people along the way. Most importantly I have reached my dream- Im a college graduate.

My question to all 8th graders from OMS during our visit this week was: "Are you ready to start dreaming, take on the world, and make your dreams come true?"

I encourage you to START DREAMING NOW, to keep your DREAMS alive.
Im convinced that LIFE is all about DREAMS and YES! Sharing my experience and part of journey with all of you is just another dream that has came true.

ITA at 2011 All Comer's Indoor Meet

This was a great day for me with my kids from tutoring program. Just like many of them described it: "We had Fun" "We ran as a team" "One of the best times of my life".

I have to thank Peter de la Cerda for inviting In The Arena to help put this event together. To all my kids that got up early on a Saturday to come and participate. Also many Thanks to Mizuno for the mizuno t-shirts and to Power Bar for the power bars.

Some of the facts that makes this event very special for me and mykids from the ITA tutoring program are:
99% of them had never been in an Indoor Track meet before.
99% never been part of a Team.
95% never competed in a sport event.
100% never heard of the Long or High Jump event.

This is an event I am very proud of. Hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed the time we all spend together.

2011 USA HALF MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2011 USA Houston Half Marathon Championship (13.1 miles) took place on Saturday, January 29Th in downtown Houston, Texas. My training leading up to this race went great. All indicated that I was well prepared to run a PR. My goal into the race was to run a 1:12:00- an average of 5:30 per mile. The results were off. I ended running 1:16:24. When I woke up I felt good, fresh, and ready to go. My warm up went well and quite honest I was very confident It was going to be a good day. It was not until right after mile 3 during the race that I started to feel a little side stitch on my stomach. This was good enough to prevent me from running no faster than 5:50 minutes per mile. Reason or explanation? Unknown. Today, one of my ribs is fairly painful and I've been having headaches and nausea since yesterday. Tomorrow calls for a visit with a physical therapist, chiropractor, and Coach.

Many of the pros from this race were:

1) It was nice to run on the 2012 Olympic Trials loop. That is exciting as the trials will be here in no time (January 14 2012).

2)Heather Wood a former Adams State athlete and friend was there for her first big post collegiate race. We warmed up and cooled down together.

3) Saw a few of my friends from Rice University (Becky Wade and Adisson Pye)

4)The highlight of my weekend was hosting a special guest for the rest of the day and night. I got to spend quality time with my 13 year old niece,Naida. I think last time she saw me compete was back in 2004. Last time we met was last year when I had a 3 hour layover in Houston and she came and hang out with me at the airport.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

It has been 4 years since the founder of In The Arena, Amory Rowe, called me and asked if I was interested in being part of the roster. Since then, I have been able to not only persue my athletic dreams, but to make a difference in the lives of thousands of children and their families in the United States.

As of today, Im so happy and excited with the ITA After School Tutoring program here in Alamosa which started 2 months ago. Kids have responded so well. It is so rewarding to see them take advantage of this opportunity. On daily basis, we have an average of 15 kids per session.

We tutor from 4:00 to 6:00p.m unless the kids need more time. When I say "WE" I refer to the rest of the staff members, Norma Gomez, Phil Archuleta, and Kimberly who volunteer their time and knowledge to keep the program going.

Eventough, it might only look like a 4 person project, there are so many people involved. Thank you to all those people that are behind the scenes (Founder,board members, donnors, foundations, volunteers, and organizations)for helping make a difference in our lives.

PIZZA, KIDS, AND HOMEWORK

The ITA After School Tutoring program has been going so well that the director from the Immigrant Resource Center, Flora Archuleta, called me up to offer a PIZZA party for our kids before the Christmas break. So, this past Wednesday December 15th our big PIZZA party took place at the tutoring center.
This was a great opportunity to take a little break from homework and bond. KIDS were very happy and excited for the surprise. Things got a little bit noisy and crazy when all of the sudden I threw in the discussion question of the evening: "Do you believe in Santa? Why or why not?" After some legit arguments, we had to stop and go back to what brought as to tutoring, HOMEWORK.

El programa de In The Arena Tutoria Despues de la Escuela ha hido tan bien que la directora de el Centro de Recursos para el Inmigrante, Flora Archuleta, me llamo para ofrecer un fiesta con PIZZA antes de las vacaciones navidenas para los ninos. Asi que el pasaso Miercoles 15 de Diciembre la gran fiesta tomo lugar en el centro de tutoria. Esta fue una gran oportunidad para tomar un descanso y acercarnos mas. Los NINOS estaban muy contentos y emocionados con la sorpresa. La cosa se puso color de hormiga cuando de repende hize la pregunta de discusion de la noche: "Crees en Santa Claus? Porque y porque no?" Despues de tener un debate muy bueno con argumentos legitimos, tuvimos que parar y regresar a lo que en primer instancia nos trajo a tutoria, LA TAREA.

SUCCESS IS A JOURNEY, NOT A DESTINATION

Louisville KY: After a long and intense journey, the Adams State men and women cross country teams finished up a successful season with a 3rd and 1st place finish at the 2010 NCAA Div II Cross Country championships this past weekend in Louisville, Kentucky.

It has been a rough journey for the women's team as they had been dealing with injuries, had defeat, and being defeated. At nationals, they were able to finish a close 3rd place to Western State by 3 points. Makes me so proud to see how much they learned from this season. There are so many positive things about this year's season that will help shape their lives. As much as they wanted to come home with the national title, some of the girls had an off day. One could tell they were digging in to pass people, but their bodies would not respond. In the sport of cross country it takes the whole team to win championship. After putting the puzzle together -race day, looking at scores in detail there is no doubt in my mind that they gave their best on that given day. They return home hungry and motivated. I heard a few of them said " Can't wait for Indoor track, so that I can redeem myself" "This was a humbling experience" that is when I had to stop and reflect. "That is the mentality and the attitude of a champion, to embrace the experience and move on". Coach Martin and the rest of the staff is excited for next year. It was quite an experience to see the women's team learn, grow, and embrace the journey.

On the other hand, the men's team dominated the field and were able to capture their third consecutive national tile by 47 point. The story of the day was Brandon Birdsong who after being 6th or 7th runner all year long, led the pack from beggining to end. At the finish line, his teammates aknowledged Birdsong and everyone was chanting his name just like in the movie Rudy, but this time it was "Birdsong! Birdsong!" It felt great to see them dominate and come together as the great big family they are. It feels wonderful to see how much they grew and learned to appreciate each other and the program as the season progressed.

Winning is a great thing, yet for the Adams Cross Country program it is all about the journey and not the destination.

THE RUNNERS OF ADAMS

This Cross Country season at Adams State has been no different. Athletes from different backgrounds and personalities still meet twice a day for a morning and afternoon practice. All of them with same goal in mind, to make the team that will represent the long green line at the national meet (There are only 7 spots on each team). Here at Adams athletes are encouraged to run as a team and for their team. Tradition and legacy is what the Adams State XC program is all about. Here you train to represent the people that ran before you; you train to leave a mark. You run not for you, but for something bigger than yourself.
I was fortunate enough to be part of this program as an athlete in 2001 and 2002. Eight years later and once again, I get to volunteer some of my ITA comunnity hours helping Coach Martin with this years men and women's team. Some of my duties range from pacing, giving out water, lots of driving, timing, encouraging, screaming my heart out at competition and learning from Coach and the Athletes.

It has been extremely inspiring to be around each and every single athlete in the program. Both the men and women teams work very hard day in and day out to reach their ultimate goals. Last weeked, both men and women won their regional championships and will now head to the Dec 4th NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Kentucky to defend their titles. Im excited I get to help out and be there for both teams on race day and beyond. Go Grizzlies!!!

On a different note, the ITA after school tutoring program has been going very well. The program made it into the local newspaper a couple of weeks ago. When I showed the newspaper to the kids they could hardly believe their picture was in there. I could tell they were just as proud as their ITA tutor.

I cant help it, but Im in LOVE and very THANKFUL with and for my ITA community work.

TUTORING PROGRAM TAKING ON A HIGH ALTITUDE CHALLENGE

Kids from after school tutoring program were very excited to participate in High Altitude Challenge 1 mile XC race recently in Alamosa, Colorado. This race was the last of a 3 race series sponsored by the Alamosa recreational center and the first race ever for many of the kids.
Alan and Brayan's parents offered to help me out by driving a few of the kids to the race and supervising. This was a great way to bond. Kids were eager and ready to leave by 4:00p.m. The highlight of the day was when I told them I had ITA t-shirts for all of them. I told them we were a team and that we were going to run, jog or walk for our Team (Team ITA). They loved the idea.

The majority of group came with me on my 1998 green wind star van. At the race, Brayan took the role of a captain by taking the group on a warm up. Jose and Laiza were scared to race, but at the end they did it. Aida and Diana stayed with Angel and paced him all the way. Oscar had a great race and said he really liked it. Alan and Jesus partnered up at half way and ran the rest of the race together. David and Miguel ran their own races and competed very well.

It was wonderful to see them compete, have fun, and learn at the same time. After the race, we gathered at the tutoring center for homework and some pizza.

ITA AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM

After weeks of discussion and preparation, the "ITA After School Tutoring Program" in Alamosa has successfully started. On October 12th,2010, tutors and students gathered for the first time at the Tierra Nueva Apartment main office.
The last two weeks have been a great success. We (parents, students and tutors) are delighted for this opportunity. I have never seen so many kids show up with a smile on their face to do homework. The fact that they decide to stay for the whole hour and thirty minutes we open the center makes us,tutors, proud.
Its wonderful to see older kids take leadership and help out the younger ones. Yes, Im excited and very proud of this new project. It will not only impact our youth, but parents, teachers,a whole community and an ITA athlete that believes in them.

Thanks to In The Arena, San Luis Valley Immigrant Resource Center, Tierra Nueva Apartments, and volunteers for trusting and helping me make this project a reality.

IN LEADVILLE WITH ADAMS STATE XC TEAMS

This morning when I was in the middle of a 15 mile Sunday run, I could not believe my luck. There I was running in one of the most scenic places near and next to Turquoise Lake in Leadville, Colorado.

In a matter of 1 hour and 45 minutes, I got to enjoy the views, celebrate that I could still move after completing my highest milage for a week ever (140 miles), and was very grateful for being part of the toughest XC teams in the nation. The Adams State Men and Women's XC Teams.

Meet the young man and women I get to train with while I prepare for the 2010 Chicago Marathon on October 10th, 2010.

Esta manana cuando estaba en medio de lo que seria un entrenamiento de 15 millas no podia creer mi suerte. Me encontraba en uno de los lugares mas escenicos cerca y al lado del lago Turquoise en Leadville, Colorado. En solo una hora y cuarenta y cinco minutos pude disfrutar de los paisajes, celebrar que aun podia moverme despues de haber completado la semana mas alta de millaje (140 millas) y muy agradecida de poder formar parte de los equipos mas fuertes de campo traviesa de todo el pais- El equipo de mujeres y hombres de campo traviesa de Adams State.

Hard to believe that I already have a 120 hours of community service at the Boys and Girls club here in Alamosa. I'm so amazed of how much I care for the kids in such a short period of time. My hours dedicated there have been and will continue to be a blast. Each day brings new stories, games, projects, questions, hugs, and a bit of drama here and there.

Increible creer que ya llevo 120 horas de servicio comunitario en el Club Boys and Girls aqui en Alamosa. Estoy impresionada de lo mucho que me he encarinado con estos ninos en tan corto tiempo. Mis horas dedicadas en el club han sido y continuaran siendo todo un reventon. Cada dia trae nuevas historias, juegos, projectos, preguntas, abrazos, y un poquito de drama aqui y alla.

After a few speaking engagements to 8th graders from Ortega Middle School at Adams State College. Ortega's Middle School counselor, Luis Murillo, contacted me to invite me speak with the rest of the students. Luis was able to set up a couple of presentations a day for a whole week.

Many time people ask me "Why do you run?" Motivating and being able to share my experiences with our youth is one big reason why I run. Running has taken me to places once I dreamed of visiting. Running has allowed me to stand in front of audiences and speak from my heart. Speaking in front of audiences was once a dream, being a reality is a true gift.

Thank you so much to Ortega Middle School students, faculty and staff for welcoming me and ITA. Many thanks to School Counselor Luis Murillo for such wonderful invitation. Congrats to all 2010 Ortega Middle School graduates. Don't ever forget that "DREAMS do come TRUE!"

The Fortis Rotterdam Marathon was in many ways a success. I went into the race wanting to run a PR (Personal Best). Coach Martin and I were very confident about my fitness, so both decided to give it a go. Thinking I was going to have people to run with the plan was to go out at a 2:30 to 2:31:30 pace and hopefully picked it up the last 10km. The race did not go as expected as I ended up running on my own. My coach and I believe we made a tactical mistake by running a little bit to fast the fist part. The unexpected winds and no water bottle (special liquids) at 20km played a big role on my ending performance. This has costed me 1 min per 5k on the second half of the race. Leaving me 4 minutes short of my initial goal time 2:30:00.

La maraton de Roterdam fue en muchos aspectos un exito. Entre la competecia con la meta de correr un mejor tiempo. Mi entrenador Damon Martin y yoestabamos eguros de que estaba muy bien preparada asi que ambos decidimos ir por un tiempo rapido. Pensando que tendria un grupo de gente con al cual correr el plan era salir a un ritmo de 2:30:30 a 2:31:30 esperando poder accelerar en los ultimos 10km. La carrer no fue como lo esperabamos y termine corriendo sola. Mi entrenador y yo creemos que cometimos un error tactico al correr un poco rapido la primera parte. Los vientos inesperados y la perdida de mi bote de agua (liquidos especiales) en el km 20 jugaron un papel muy importante en los resultados finales. Ya que me a costado un minuto por 5km en la segunda midad. Dejandome con aproximadamente 4 minutos corta de my meta inicial 2:30:00.

I leave Rotterdam with a 7th place finish and the A Olympic qualifying standard for 2012 Olympic trials. The trials will be held on January 2012 in Houston TX. The top three finishers will make the USA Olympic team for the 2012 summer Olympics in London. With an Automatic pass to the trials, I'm excited and motivated to go after a personal best on my next marathon.

"United to make a difference" Jefferson Elementary School

This year I started my racing season in Edinburg Texas. I was there for The All-America City 10K Run/Walk. This race was founded in 1983 and continues to be a South Texas roadrace tradition. Even tough I finished 4th overall and was the first American, my racing results are secondary compared to the amount of kids I was able to interact with the days prior to the race.
As a family-oriented event that promotes wellness and fitness all elite athletes were encouraged to visit the schools in Edinburg and I want to star off showing you some pictures from our visit to Jefferson Elementary.

ITA IN DEL NORTE AT HIGH VALLEY COMMUNITY CENTER

The High Valley Community Center in Del Norte, Colorado was founded in 2000.

The mission of the High Valley Community Center is to provide opportunities and activities that promote the healthy development of creative minds and active bodies among the citizens of the Del Norte and South Fork areas.

Director Adrienne Atencio and staff members have been making sure the mission is accomplished by implementing new programs such as: After School program, Adult Classes, FREE Computer Lab, FREE Performances, Teen Night, etc It was not a surprised that the High Valley Community center contacted me months in advance to ask if I was interested in coming down to Del Norte to speak with the kids about what is it like to be a marathoner.

The kids were very interested in learning all about the marathon. We talked about distance, time, race plans, hydration, competitions,etc. I was even invited to come back during the summer and run a 5km race with them :)

I had been to Ms, Malouff's class before, so this was a great opportunity to share some more time with all the kids. The highlight of the night was when one of the students asked me if she could introduced me to her parents. " Mom, Dad, this is my friend Zoila Gomez. She is the one that gave me the new T-Shirt." Her parents thanked me for the ITA t-shirt and told me they were very happy to meet me as their daughter had been sharing stories about me at home.

I was invited by Ms. Laura Malouff to come to her 3rd grade class and share some of my memories from when I lived in Mexico. Not much has changed in my family and hometown since I left Mexico (12 years ago), so I was able to show the kids the family pictures I took from my last trip to Mexico (October 2008). This was an opportunity to show the other side of the picture. A little bit of what is around my life as a person an not as the famous runner they see in me when I come to visit :) Also, this was not only a great bonding experience, but a learning one. THANK YOU so much to Ms. Malouff for allowing me into her class and to all the kids for trusting me and being my friends.

My experience at the World Marathon championships in Berlin is going to be one to remember. Race day, I found myself excited and with good feelings. I was very confident this was going to be a great day not only for me , but for my team. Leading up to this marathon, training had gone excellent. Me and my coach Damon Martin were sure I could place in the top 20 and finished up with a personal best.

All was going as planned until 20km mark when I was hampered by blisters. Its hard to explain the mix of emotions I went through for the second half of the race. I was in disbelief, disappointed while part of me was happy I was still running. To make things worst, someone threw away my liquids on the most important station of all, the 30km mark. Crossing the finished line was a huge physical and emotional relief.
I was able to bounce back and give myself credit for finishing. I was and I am very proud of myself and happy to see all the good things that came out of it.

For sure I can say that, this is a marathon that allowed me to stay true to Roosevelt’s vision and In the Arena's founding principles.

“It’s not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, and comes short again and again...who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”

I am proud to be "In the Arena". I am grateful for the whole World Championship experience- The training, all the kids I reached, my time in Berlin, the new people I met, and the race- Every single part of this journey was well worth it. Yet, I have failed to reach a goal I will remain IN THE ARENA, because I do believe there will be a time when I will write about what does it feel to succeed.

Life is full of surprises and wonderful experiences. I remember many years ago talking to my sisters before going to bed about one day going to Europe. We traveled along our favorite actors to Europe through the tv shows and we often wondered if one day we would ever make it there in real life. After many years, here I am. I am in Berlin for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics. I am getting adjusted for what will be the biggest race of the year, the World Marathon Championships next Sunday, August 23rd at 11:15a.m Berlin time.

For the second time, I will have the honor to don on the USA uniform. Being able to represent my adopted country for the second time is a true blessing and my only goal is to represent it to the best of my abilities. I am aware there are thousands of athletes back home who would die to be in my shoes and I will not take this opportunity lightly. Being around the best athletes in the world has me inspired and very motivated. Also, being here proves me once again that hard work, patience, determination, and endless persistence can take you far. As far as the continent I only dreamed to visit one day.

OLYMPIC TRAINING CENTER

On June 14th, 2009 most of the USA marathon athletes and their coaches that will compete at the World Championships Marathon in Berlin this coming Agust 22nd and 23rd were invited for a two day Marathon summit at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The whole experience was incredible. We did not only learned from the best sports nutritionist Dr. Dan Benardot and exercise physiologis Dr, Dave Marin, but we had the chance to learn from ourselves and the other athletes that made it to the summit.

Dr.Dave Martin going over the World Championships Marathon Course. Dr. Martin made a total of three trips to Berlin to gather as much information as possible to share it with all of us :)

Coach Martin and I left Alamosa Sunday afternoon and on the way there I was able to learn more about his journey. How he ended up at Adams and what it has been like for him to make it this far. After I heard some of his personal stories I felt very fortunate and more than ever I am so proud and happy to have a Coach like him.

Rock Creek is located 24 miles west of Alamosa. This is by far my favorite place to go run up the Mountains. Last week I allowed myself to go and run/jog there. Here are some pictures of last weeks Mt. Run. Rock Creek esta localizado a 24 millas al Oeste de Alamosa. Este es mi lugar favorito para correr montanas. La semana pasada me permiti ir a correr/trotar a Rock Creek. Aqui estan algunas fotografias.

My goal for today is to make it to the top. Pacing yourself is important as all of it is a gradual uphill and we also go up in altitud. We'll go from 9,000ft to 11,000ft. Mi meta por el dia es llegar a la cima. El llevar un ritmo relajado es importante y que la ruta es subida gradual y tambien vamos subiendo en altura. Iremos de 2743m sobre el nivel del mar a 3352metros.

I would normally start from here, but this time we were running out of time that I started a few miles before. Normalmente comienzo desde aqui, pero por falta de tiempo comenze unos kilometros antes.

Around the Golf Course

Meet "Lupita" and "Jasmine"- We met at my apartment at 8:00am- I drove to the trail and then we took off for a fun adventure- Conoce a "Lupita" y "Jasmine". Nos reunimos en mi apartamento a las 8:00 a.m y maneje hasta la ruta para despues ir a una aventura divertida.

A.M Super e-z run- I had two wonderful partners with me today- Lupita (6) and Jasmine (9)- Both are my neightboors and asked me if they could come and run with me someday- Well, today they rode their bikes and we went around the golf course- Then we went to school and I added 3.5 miles on the treadmill while they rested and checked out the building :) Afterwards we went to the store to get some snacks- All of it was new to them and they left home saying " We really loved it, maybe we can go run with you some other time"

Rodaje super relajado-Hoy tuve la compania de dos ninas encantadoras, mis vecinitas, Lupita(6) y Jasmine (9)-Ambas me habian preguntado antes si algun dia ellas podian veir a correr conmigo y hoy manejaron sus bicicletas y fuimos a correr alrededor del campo de golf-Luego fuimos a la escuela donde corri el resto en la caminadora mientras ellas tomaba u descanzo y se familiarizaban con el edificio-Despues fuimos a la tienda a comprar unos snacks (bocadillos). Todo resulto ser una experiencia nueva para ambas y se fueron a sus casas diciendo " Nos fascino, ojala podamos ir contigo a correr en otra ocacion"

Now we are on the other side of the bridge next to the golf course. Ahora estamos del otro lado del puente al lado del campo de golf.

Lupita and Jasmine told me this was their first time on he trail. Las ninas me dijeron que esta era su primera vez por estos rumbos.

At 2 miles 1/2 they decided to stop and take their jackets off. Despues de 4km deciden parar a quitarse sus chamarras.

They refused to stop and take a break. We will make a right and go back to the bridge. No querian parar a tomar un descanzo. Daremos a la derecha y regresaremos a el puente.

We are a mile away from the bridge. Lupita told me " Zoila, Do you have my mom's phone #? I dont think I am going to make it" I encouraged her to take a little break. She did, but for less than a minute. 1600m para llegar a el puente. Lupita me dijo: " Zoila, tienes el telefono de mama? Creo que no podre terminar" La anime a tomar un descanzo. Lo hizo pero por menos de 1 minuto.

We made it back to the bridge. Lo logramos estamos de regreso al puente.

Jasmine is not scared anymore. She really enjoys crossing the bridge.Jasmine ya no tiene mas miedo y disfruta el cruzar el puente.

Lupita is very happy, because there is gatorate waiting for us on the other side :) Also,she knows she is going to make it! Lupita esta muy feliz porque hay gatorate esperando por nosotras al otro lado del puente. Ademas, ella sabe que lo va a lograr!

2009 MILE FUN RUN AT BOYD

The 2009 spring mile fun run at Boyd Elementary was a great success. All participants- around 350 2nd and 3rd graders- completed the race. Many parents and relatives came over to cheer and In The Arena could not miss this great event. Take a look :)

My mother, Sra. Alicia Carrera Zapata

One of the many things I enjoy doing when I am not training or racing is visiting with family and friends. Last October, I took the time to go back to the town I was born and raised -Charcas, San Luis Potosi, Mexico-. During my visit I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with my mother.

My mother enjoys cooking outdoors

As many people already know, my mother is the person I admire the most. Both of us have very different agendas plus living in different countries and 3,000miles apart makes it somewhat harder for us to see each other. So, today I am celebrating the most important person in my life, my mother.

Yes, she still finds time to raise chickens..

My mother, Alicia Carrera Zapata is 67 years old. She is caring, friendly, compassionate and the most intelligent-wise person I have ever known in my short 29 years of life. She started working since she was 12 years old. Her dream was to become a doctor or teacher, but because of her socio-economical status she only attended first grade. She had a total of 16 children and with hard work and perseverance she became a very successful and independent business person.

At 67, she stills works and provides for herself. One of the many things I admire about my mother is her enthusiasm and passion for her job. During my most recent visit to Mexico in October, It meant the world to me to be around her. I am happy to say that I had a blast cleaning, cooking, traveling,and most of all enjoying my mother's company to its fullest.

It was a great honor to listen to the many stories and lessons my mother had to share. Also, It felt good to be treated like a daughter. It was nice to see that I am good at other things besides running. I am thankful for those two weeks.

Even though, today it was not possible to be around to celebrate Mother's Day with her, I know she knows she is always in my heart. To all the Mom's around- I wish you had a wonderful Mother's Day... and to all the sons,daughters, and husbands out there- Let's not forget that we can always celebrate our mothers all year around!

RACING SEASON RECAP

"DO WHAT YOU CAN WITH WHAT YOU HAVE WHERE YOU ARE" Teddy Roosevelt

For 2009 the focus has been to run "shorter" distances and chase some PRs on the track. The following is a brief summary of my participation at USA XC Championships, Cherry Blossom 10miler, and the 5km on the track at the Mt.Sac relays.

February 7, 2009
Agricultural History Farm Park -
Derwood, Maryland

The race was at a criterion course. We had to run 4 x around the 2km hilly loop. I went into the race with very high expectations. My goal was to finish in the top 6, so that I could be selected to represent the USA at the XC World Championship in Jordan. My race came to an end just after we pass the 2km mark when I fely a very sharp side stitch on my stomach. I tried to relax and get rid of the pain. I remained positive hoping that the pain would go away and that eventually I could move up in position. I did feel somewhat better towards the end, but at that point It was to late to move up. Also, it was not only the physical pain that was killing me inside, but the emotional one. I finished 20th with a time of 29:21. Later on, I figured out my side stitch was the result of a minor accident I had during training a couple of days before the race where I hit a pole and bruised my rib. I had the side stitch for long 7 days. The most painful 7 training days of my life. In some of my training runs I had to incorporate some walking to make it back to school.

After my experience at XC Nationals, I was so excited to race again. My training prior to the race had gone excellent. Also, I was very anxious to spend a few days in Washington DC. This time around my goal was to ran a smart, strong race. During the race I felt very strong. Yet, I made a tactical mistake that I believe cost me not only a better place, but to ran faster. I let the main pack go after the 1st mile thinking me and the 2nd group would eventually catch up (Not very smart). I ended up doing all the work on the second group and yes, we were not able to catch up. I finished 16th with a time of 55:55.

Last time I ran a 5km on the track was my senior year while competing for Adams State College back in 2004-"Oh Lord, I am getting old"- I was pumped, excited about this 5km. My goal a PR- Something better than 15:57. This time around I felt physically and mentally ready for the task at hand. No minor accidents during the week and this time around I was planning on choosing the right group to run with. Also, I was expecting it was going to hurt- A PR was not going to come easy.
Everything was as expected until just after we passed the 1km mark when someone that was 2 spots in front of me fell down. The girl that was in front of me was able to jump over. As for me, all I remember is falling down in slow motion and getting up as fast as I could. Too much for a 5km PR- I finished 23rd with a time of 16:23.

Today a couple of members of my family and I had the perfect opportunity to see how it does not take much to make children happy. It was around 6:00p.m when I went into my room and decided that it was time to work on my blog. First, I was sure I wanted to post on my performance at the Cherry Blossom 10 miler last weekend in Washington, DC. Then, I recalled I could post about the local Indoor Track meet where a lot of young kids participated back on Valentine's day. Yet, with all these great information and pictures to share I felt something more important was missing.

This weekend, the weather here in Alamosa has been cold and snowy. I was positive none of the kids from the neighborhood were able to celebrate Easter outdoors this weekend. I looked outside and it look "perfect" to go hunt eggs. Right away, I asked my sister if she could help me set up something.To me it was easy, we already had a basket of eggs (40) that we could use to hide. I had a couple of Hanna Montana and Disney shirts, pencils, and a few dollar bills from my piggy bank. All I needed was someone to support me in such a spontaneous event.

My sister was all for it, so I called my nephew Brayan and asked him if he could help. His help was vital as he would be in charge of asking the kids from the neighborhood if they wanted to participate. It was getting late and cold, so we had to move quickly if we wanted to make this happen. Alicia helped me post the ITA banner up,I marked all the eggs and gatherd all the prizes, and Brayan went out to invite as many kids as possible.

Soon, children started coming out of their apartments. All of them were very excited just to participate and their excitement was more obvious when I told them that the majority of the eggs had a special value they could exchange afterwards.

So, for today.. No Cherry Blossom 10 miler and Indoor Track meet recap, but an ITA athlete that was able to see how It does not take a lot to make children happy.

Jump Rope For Heart is a national educational fund-raising program that is sponsored by the American Heart Association. Elementary school students are encouraged to help raising funds to support lifesaving heart and stroke research.

Students ask friends and family for donations and receive thank-you gifts based on the dollars they raise. Besides that students get to spend 1 to 2 hours jumping. This educational program not only teaches physical fitness, but promotes the value of community service. It shows students that they can make a contribution to their communities.

This year here in Alamosa, Boyd Elementary School held the event at the Adams State College Indoor track. In The Arena was there to witness how all these kids let their hearts out to contribute to such a wonderful cause. I have a great video to post, but I am having touble uploading it.. TIPS TO BREAK RECORDS

Amory Rowe, the founder of In The Arena shared with all the ITA athletes an article she found quite interesting. The article is about Richard Jenkins, a man who is attempting to break the world land speed record over ground by a sail powered craft. At the end of the article, Richard shares with us a piece of advice called "Tips for Record Breakers"

MIGUEL HIDALGO Y COSTILLA SECONDARY SCHOOL

Charcas,S.L.P (Mexico): The school is only a block away from the house I grew up. I attended Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla for 7th, 8th and 9th grade. The school looked the same. It almost felt as if I never left. There were around 200 students waiting for me in the auditorium.

The introduction was mind-blowing. One of the professors wrote an amazing biography of me that he shared with everyone before I took over. When it was time for me to speak, I broke down into tears- tears of happiness of course and that's basically how my presentation started. I talked for almost 2 hours. The young students were very attentive and respectful. Many stayed afterwards to take pictures. They could hardly believe I had gone to that school.

Here are some of their comments:

Dear Zoila, Honestly, you really motivated me. I've been dealing with some problems lately like the ones you shared with us, but I had promised my friends to stop hurting myself. You really made me feel so much better. I am the girl who was sitting way in front and was wearing a white jacket. Hope you remember me. You really motivated me and I really like you. ITA IN MEXICO: PART ll

Escuela Secudaria Tecnica (Venado S.L.P)

Being able to connect with the students from Venado's secondary school meant a lot. I lived in Venado for 2 years and I went to first grade there. Many of my childhood memories come from this beautiful town. I was excited to go and share my experience with all of them. To make it to my conference I took the bus from Charcas to Venado. When the bus arrived to Venado I had a good mile walk before I got to the school.

Around 150 students show up to hear me speak. They seemed very interested. Just like in other schools the students wrote down some of their impressions and we took pictures after I was done speaking.

Its obvious that there is way more than just running and racing. I am grateful I can go and share my experiences with others.

NATURE VS NURTURE

My Coach Damon Martin and I celebrating my 4th place finish at the 2008 Marathon Olympic Trials in Boston.

1. What is the athletic background of your parents and family? None of them ever did sports. My father liked baseball and used to coach a team on our town. Probably, I was not even born when he coached.

2. When did you begin participating in your sport? 8th grade I played basketball for a 1/2 of a season.

THE EXTRAS

1. What was your early experiences with sport like? I love every single aspect of it. I was hooked. Great experiences.

2. How instrumental were parents and coaches in the early part of your development as an athlete? I had only one coach in 8th grade that really motivated me... Parents were never involved.. Here in the US Coaches have been the biggest influence in my development as an athlete.

3. How were you introduced to your sport and how many other sports did you seriously participate in? My High School PE teacher encouraged me to join the track team back in 1997. There is only one other sport I have seriously participated. This was basketball in middle school.

4. Is your success a product of nature or nurture? Both.. I have always loved outdoors, but without the support and encouragement of my coaches I would not be nearly the athlete I am today. Ex: I did basketball when I was 13 and I did not do sports again until I was 18- Thanks to the encouragement of my PE teacher...

5. Are you an expert in your field? (by your own definition) No, I still have a lot to learn and improve.

IN THE ARENA IN MEXICO

JUSTO SIERRA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

When I am not training or racing I enjoy visiting family and friends. After a long and productive year of running, I took the time to go back to the town I was born and raised -Charcas, San Luis Potosi, Mexico-. During my visit I did several speaking engagements at the local schools.

Ms. Tayde's 6th grade class

My first stop was at the Justo Sierra elementary school. This is the school I went to when growing up. First, I walked around the school and took a look at some of the classrooms to see if any of my former teachers was still around. In the process, I decided to sit down and make good use of the flip video camara by recording a group of third graders playing during PE class.

After 15 minutes or so, I decided to ask the PE teacher if I could speak with the kids. The kids were amazed and most of them could not believe that I had gone to Justo Sierra elementary school. To prove that I was saying the truth I asked the PE teacher if any of my former professors were around. To my surprise, Teacher Tayde was still there teaching 6th grade. Then I proposed the 3rd graders to go and surprised Ms.Tayde.

During my second visit the students had to finish their previous assignment, before I answer some of their questions.

It felt so good to see Ms. Tayde again and Yes! She confirmed I used to go to Justo Sierra elementary school. That day I spend the rest of the afternoon visiting with 6th graders. Thank you very much to Ms. Tayde for letting me come back to spend more time with In The Arena's new group of kids.

INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY

According to the oficial International Walk to School webpage:

"In 2006, an estimated 5,000 schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia held Walk to School events"

"In 2007, millions of walkers from around the world walked to school"

Here in Alamosa, Colorado the International Walk to School Day is celebrated in early October. All the students from Alamosa are encouraged to meet at the local park early in the morning to walk to school.

Who Are They?

This is my second year participating. This time I walked over Boyd Elementary School with 2nd and 3rd graders. Boyd Elementary is just a mile away from the park.

It was wonderful to see parents, teachers and volunteers involved in such a fun event.

After the event, I spend some time with students at the cafeteria.

ALAMOSA HIGH SCHOOL XC TEAM

During the summer I got a phone call from a parent of one of the members of the Alamosa High School Cross Country (XC) Team. This phone call was an open invitation to come and support the Cross Country Team with a fundraising.

Head Coach: Larry Zaragoza

All the XC athletes agreed on having a 24 hour relay. The relay consisted on running around the Ortega Middle School dirt track for 24 hours. They would log the miles ran and then they would go out and find someone to sponsor them.
The sponsor would agree to pay .25 cents for each mile run by the athlete during those 24 hours. The purpose of this fudraisig was to cover the traveling expenses for a XC race in San Diego.

I was happy to be part of such a amazing event. That day I still had a p.m run, so I joined the group around 6:00pm and run 6 miles around the track while the athletes took a break and had some dinner.

The energy, enthusiasm and support all these athletes had was amazing. It was wonderful to see how some parents and family members came to cheer on the team. I left home around 9:00p.m to get some sleep on my bed while all the coaches and team members stayed on the field the entire night. The athletes would take turns to run and sleep until 8:00am the next day.

The following morninig I got up at 6:00 a.m and headed to the track and run 11 miles. The miles I run were given to some of the athletes that had less miles. It was nice to be part of such an event. I was inspired and honor to be part of a 24 hour relay run.

To me this is a real TEAM..

ADAMS STATE HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY CAMP

The 2008 Adams State High Altitude Cross Country Camp was a great success.
High School runners from all over the country pose in this picture after a mountain run "Rock Creek" that started at 9,000ft and finished at 11,100ft. GREAT JOB!

During this time of the year there are thousands of student athletes in the United States getting ready for the most important race of their season. Some will be competing at the State Championship while others are aiming for an individual or team national title in the United States. To all of you that I have had the opportunity to come across, I congratulate you for making it this far.

There is nothing more satisfactory in Cross Country than running not for you, but for your school, your teammates, coaches, and all of those that have fully supported you in such an amazing journey.For many this journey started during the summer. I cannot imagine the amount of miles or hours of training all this athletes commit to. Yet, they do it with a goal in mind. To make the varsity team, make it to state championship, improve their times, be part of a team, make someone proud, or they simply do it because, they love the sport.

This summer I had the opportunity to speak in front of approximately 250 amazing Cross Country High School athletes from all over the nation. I hope all of them are having successful seasons or have been able to cope with any injuries or setbacks. To me all of these athletes are already making a difference in their early lives and the lives of those that surrounds them. The best to all of you!

"USADA" IN ALAMOSA

The Flip Video camera really comes in handy!

Its 6:00a.m and I text coach Martin to see when I can come to practice. Within a minute or so I get a text back that reads:

"Janet will be done around 7:00a.m you can come then. Today's workout is: 65min and 5 times 100meters"

I get to the office by 7:15a.m, I stretch and turn on the radio. I am on the "ALTER G" (Anti-gravity treadmill) by 7:45a.m. I am in the office by myself and I listen to the Spanish radio station while I am running. Listening to the local radio station reminds me a lot of my mother, since most of the music being played is "Nortena" my mother's favorite.

Five minutes into my run Coach Martin comes into the office. Then, 10 minutes later 2representatives from USADA (The United States Anti-Doping Agency) show up asking for me. Coach Martin greets them and lets them know I am a quarter or so into my morning practice. Both representatives wait in the office until I finish so that I can fill out some paperwork and provide them with a urine sample. It only takes 30 minutes to complete the process.

This shows USADA is doing their job by testing athletes out of competition. I am honor to be one of the athletes that gets to be tested, because just like Coach mentioned to the representatives this morning "Zoila is all about running 120-140 miles a week"

TO MY MOST FAVORITE FRIEND

Dear Wes:

Two years have past since your departure and I found myself thinking of you during my 11 mile run this morning. I kept thinking of our trip to Mexico and all the lessons you shared with me during the 4 years of our friendship. When I met your daughter Alicia during history class back in 2002, I never imagined that my life was going to take such wonderful shift.

How can I forget the first time I met your wife Kathy and your 9 wonderful children at Adrian’s wedding. Short after the wedding, I was invited to your house for dinner. When I arrived at your house I felt like at home. I felt I had found a new family. That day Kathy introduced me to the best fried chicken and mash potatoes ever. Being at your house I always felt secure and at peace. By late June, we found ourselves planning a road trip to Mexico. That trip was a by far the best experience of my life. You taught me to see and appreciate the spiritual side of things. You helped me realized things I was unaware off.

I was always amazed by your ability to listen and to get to people’s hearts. You were able to break my shell and you help me admit and show my vulnerability. Remember when I could not take it anymore while we were at my mother’s house in Mexico and I had the biggest melt down of all time. I will never forget when you told me “You are not the super women you think” “You can control some things, but there is no way you can control everything and everyone that comes to your life” I am so thankful you made me realize that It was not my job to change my mother’s life style. I was clear I had to accept my mother just the way she was, because I was the daughter and she was my mother. You advised me to enjoy my mother’s company to its fullest and make the best of our trip. Thank you for all those lessons and the wonderful moments.

I am still pursuing my dream of becoming an Olympian. I was 4th at the Olympic trials on April. I am excited for the future and I am looking forward to make the 2012 Olympic Team. Soon after your departure, I joined “In the Arena” an organization that has fully supports me since 2006. A huge blessing! When Amory, the founder, called me to give me the news, I knew God had worked his magic to make this happen. Since then I had made big improvements in my running. Now, I get a massage at least once a week and I get to take naps pretty much every day for recovery. Also, I can afford to support my mother on monthly bases. The best part of being part of “In The Arena” is that I get to reach out to the youth. I found myself involved in speaking engagements and hanging out with kids from the local elementary school. If anything this has become a growing experience.

Norma, her husband, Alicia and the kids are doing great. We still live together and continue to support one another. My next race will be the Chicago Marathon on October 12th. If you can be there in sprit that would be terrific. My training for Chicago has been fantastic. My goal is to improve on my time and break the 2:30 minutes barrier. After that, I will take a nice break from running. I am contemplating going back to Mexico for vacation.

Wes, you really took the role of a big brother and really made a difference in the lives of me and my sisters. One way or another, you always made sure me and my sisters were protected. Did I ever told you that, you really made my day when you brought the entire family to cheer me on during the Adams State cross county home meet back in 2002. Oh God, there is so much to thank you about. Hope you are doing well wherever you might be. To me, you are still alive. You are a great friend, my most favorite friend of all times. YES, WE MISS YOU VERY, VERY MUCH.

SUMMER OLYMPICS

Hard to believe, the Summer Olympics came to an end and I find myself so inspired and encouraged by moments, athletes and a country that made the impossible possible by coming up with an amazing show.

Let me star with the opening ceremonies: Spectacular, mind blowing, incredible, astonishing, you name it! That evening the Alamosa High School Cross Country team had a 24 hour relay going on at their dirt track for fundraising purposes. I had no worries as I knew I could replay the opening ceremonies on the Internet. After my 6 mile leg at the middle school dirt track, I rushed home to watch the second part of the opening ceremonies with the rest of the family.

What about Michael Phelps and the entire swimming team? I do not know much about swimming, but what I saw on T.V. was just phenomenal. Phelps is just an example of how far years of hard training, commitment, and dedication can take you. Along with a network of support that made sure he was ready to go and get the job done. It was wonderful to see my 3 year old nephew get excited for the swimming competitions.

My most favorite moment was to watch Shawn Johnson win a individual gold medal on the beam. She stole my heart from day one. I admire her personality and professionalism. She never stopped smiling and cheering on her teammates. I admit I cried as she received her well deserved individual gold medal, cried some more when they were playing the national anthem and had a few tears come out when they interviewed her about her experience.

Many people e-mail me asking about my thoughts about the Women’s Olympic Marathon. Definitely, anything can happen in a marathon. I was extremely happy for Constantina Dita from Romania. She went for it and her courageous move paid off. This is an example of an athlete who never gave up and kept persevering. Finally, after many years of training and experience Constantina made it to the top winning the biggest honor of all, the Olympic GOLD medal.

I was in shock when Deena Kastor had to stop. I could not believe it. The first question that came to mind was WHY? Why Deena and why now? Deena has been an inspiration to me since the very first time I learned about her back in 1999. I admire her not only as the discipline fast runner she is, but I admire her as the women and kind person she is. It was unfortunate that she had to stop at the Olympics. I am confident she will bounce back and heal soon from this experience. If there is anyone that can handle staff like this is her. Deena is a fighter and will make the best of this experience.

If there is anything I learned from this Summer Olympics is that a single race or event does not determine who we are; but the journey, experiences, victories and defeats are the ones that help us define who we truthfully are.

THE BOILERMAKER!

As I had promised, I have some pictures from "The Boilermaker" a 15km road race in Utica, New York. This was my third year coming to this race and the whole weekend was quite an experience. There are so many things that make this race very special such as the community, volunteers, friends and elite runners.

1) The Community

All the people in Utica come together on race day. If people are no racing that day, they are volunteering or you will see people cheering for you for the entire 9.3 miles. This year one of my goals was to take a picture from the stage, so that you could see the amount of people who stay after the race just for the award ceremony. Isn't this cool?

2) Volunteers

The day before the race I came across Joe Johnson and Tim Fitzgerald. It was nice to be able to chat and share some of my experiences with them. I hope they have a great XC and Track seasons. Big Thanks to all the volunteers that make sure we had plenty of water during the race. Greetings to Jena Comstock, Kali Fical, Mike Fitzgerald, Debbie Comstock and Kim Fical.

3) Friends

Elizabeth and Mariann. I met Elizabeth back in 2005 when I run at Peachtree and I met Mariann in 2006 during my first Boilermaker. It was wonderful to get to see them again.

Larry Rawson, the best Track and field and marathon analyst of the whole world. He is one of my most favorite commentator. Larry knows how to cheer one on. Thanks Larry!

Kathrine, the fist women to officially enter and run the Marathon. She is a great role model and an inspiration.

I could not leave the stage without taking a picture with the Governor of New York, Mr. David A. Paterson. Yes, after a few attempts, finally one of his body guards had some compassion and offer to take the picture. Still, I can not stop smiling! That was by far the challenge of the day.

After the race, I had a blast in company of international athletes Lidia Simon from Romania, Felix Limo from Kenia,and Nadia Ejjafini from Morocco.

Yes! This year, The Boilermaker was a blast. An event that will remain in my heart and will motivate me as I continue on this journey.

RUNNING AWAY

In the Arena athlete, Mike Hazle , makes USA Olympic Team

On behalf of the 8,000 young boys and girls we have already reached, I would like to congratulate all the “In the Arena” athletes for their inspiring performances as they attempted to earn an Olympic spot at the US Olympic Trials last month. Congratulations to Mike Hazle for making the US Olympic Team in the Javelin, a huge accomplishment and a well deserved honor.

Last week, I was scheduled to travel to Utica, New York for the Boilermaker, a 15km international road race that is well known for bringing some of the best athletes in the world and for having huge crowds that line up to cheer you on for the whole 9.3 mile course. Every year it amazes me how the whole community comes together on race day.This was my third year competing at the Boilermaker. I was excited to go back, have a great race, and meet up with many friends.

Just hours before I had to hit the road to catch up an airplane in Denver, CO (4 hour drive) I stopped by the Ortega Middle School here in Alamosa to spend some time with a group kids. Mi visit with these young enthusiastic kids turned out to be fun, pleasant and even a personal one. After I introduced myself and let them know all about my background, athletic career, and shared a few stories we moved on into comments or questions. Thank you guys for sharing some of your own personal goals, for wanting to know about what it takes to chase the dream of becoming an Olympian, and for all the tips, encouragement, and great deal of advice received. Believe it or not, these kids are smarter than one could ever think.

I was very happy to leave the town knowing that back home was a group of kids possibly thinking and planning out their future and how they could make their immediate dreams come true. One of the stories I got to share with the group was about one of my early dreams.

“One of my very first dreams or fantasies (8 or 9 years old) was to run away from home and make my way to a big city, find a job.. Find a family that could adopt me, get an education, be successful and eventually take care of my mother.. I remmember my plan was to bring a few cans of tuna for the road and I would beg for money or ask for a job during my journey. Back then, these plans ended up being only plans. Yes, I never run away from home. Yet, now days I do find myself running away from home to big cities and other countries for competition. Yes, it took me nearly 20 years to do so, but I do it in a realistic way. Studying and working hard everyday at what I love doing, running, has allowed me to run away from home at least once a month. My point is that we can start making baby steps to our future now by dreaming of the type of life we want to live when we grow up. Always keeping our dreams and fantasies in our hearts and working toward them. Eventually, some of these dreams will become true”

After I was done speaking, we hanged out in the classroom, took pictures and I got to sign up autographs. As I was signing autographs I could hear some kids saying staff like: “Yes, I am telling you she is famous” or “ I will print a picture of her and post it in my room”. Many girls came up to me for a hug and promised me they would keep in contact. I did not have any ITA t-shirts in hand, but we made a deal. I encouraged the kids to write me a letter or e-mail letting me knows what size of t-shirt they would need and a return address, so that I could mail them an ITA shirt. Amory, I hope you do not mind.
